days like this I need to remind myself that if Morrissey hasn’t murdered anyone (yet) then I can do it too
On this very day 20 years ago Brandon Teena was murdered. You don’t even know how tempting it is to drop a “Goodnight, sweet prince” and be done with it but fuck that.
He wasn’t a prince: he was a fighter and a brave one.
People cried because now, in some places, a wealthy minority in the gay and lesbian community can get married. Good for them, but it’s dangerous to think that solves anything. It’s dangerous to think that hate laws that criminalize the perpetrator and do nothing to prevent the deed will solve anything. It’s better for them to let you think that gay rights are the rights of white middle-class gay and lesbian poster boys and girls wearing cardigans and paying their taxes.
The gay rights movement seems to have forgotten their trans brothers and sisters who in most cases can’t even get a job nevermind getting married.
The least I can do today is remember Brandon Teena and remember that it isn’t over yet.
should I replay the old Ace Attorney games or…………. write this essay?
xmas eve with yours truly
NOTE: The below contains spoilers. If you have not played past Case 3 in Dual Destinies yet, I advise that you skip this post. The live reaction to this character is far better than any coming in having some inkling of what to expect.
I’ve seen many a thing about this girl, sparking a bunch…
Finally done with Turnabout Academy, yay. I totally agree with this post but I’d like to point out a couple of things.
It’s true that Robin’s femininity is not really the problem; we know from experience that certain girls like them shoes and they feel empowered by their own display of femininity, so why not? (edit: although the fact that Robin faints in court only as a girl it’s a little bit too much stereotyping. If Robin as a person was weak-hearted and prone to fainting she would’ve been so as a guy as well.)
I also agree that Robin is not necessarily a transphobic character: on the contrary, she now knows what does gender dissonance mean. Why the hyper masculine act? Because that’s what’s expected from men and in fact no one ever doubted her being a guy.
Why am I offended then? I am offended because Robin Newman can live as a boy and perform her stereotypically masculine behaviour without being called a “freak” whereas Florent L’Belle from the previous case, a guy with stereotypical feminine behaviour, is repetitively called a monster by Apollo. He’s rotten, wicked and vain and his makeup and perfume are symbols of his moral decadence.
It’s okay for girls to aspire to me masculine because masculinity entails positive traits but feminine men? That’s a big no-no. If you want to be feminine (ie weak, irrational, emotional, vain) instead of masculine then there’s must be something wrong with you, you must be a Deviant Dandy as Blackquill says.
Now I know that in the Ace Attorney series there’s plenty of positive feminine male-bodied characters (I’m thinking of that Cook I forgot the name of and Max Galactica, maybe? Surely there are others) but it’s also true that they’re all comic-reliefs and we’re supposed to laugh at their quirks.
l’belle is considered a monster because he is a rude, condescending bastard who insults other people regularly, much like redd white from the first game. robin is not considered a freak or monster because she is a friendly, likable person regardless of whether she’s presenting as a male or a female. if their personalities were more similar then your argument would hold more water, but i frankly don’t think it’s a very good one.
also, we’re supposed to laugh at literally every character’s quirks, not just feminine, male bodied character’s. franziska whipping the shit out of people is played for laughs, godot’s coffee love is played for laughs, pearl being sure that phoenix and maya are in love is played for laughs.
I wasn’t really trying to make a point as much as trying to understand what was it about Robin that disturbed me on a personal basis! I love her as a character, in fact she’s one of my favourites even, but the way the game treats matters of gender sometimes it’s a little bit meh.
And I also wasn’t trying to argue that one should like L’Belle at all. The thing is I am so tired of the feminine-and-rotten villain trope and frankly it’s been played so fucking much (like, I can think of Noir movies from the 40s with the same figure) that I wish they’d stop it. Of course L’Belle is a bastard, but the amount of snappy comments and mockery on his physical appearance remains unwarranted.
And you’re right, pretty much anyone in the series is a little bit cray cray. Still I think that making fun of people because of their gender expressions is cheap comedy most of the time. I’m not saying I didn’t fucking love that frilly cook whose name I forgot because I did and it was mad fun, but at the same time you risk laughing AT them instead of with them.
